Description

Summary

Huperzine A is a compound that occurs naturally and belongs to the Huperziceae family. It is mostly found in a Chinese plant known as the Chinese club moss. Huperzine A is an extract of the Chinese Club Moss plant Huperzia serrata. It is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, which means it prevents the breakdown of acetylcholine. It increases the acetylcholine in the body. [1] [6] This also means it is a cholinergic, as it supplements the amount of acetylcholine in the brain, thus increasing the level of Acetylcholine in the body.* [7]  While most companies that manufacture this drug begin with a plant, most of their products are due to numerous lab manipulations. Unlike most herbs that contain hundreds of chemicals, this one is intensely purified to get it to a usable state. Most people argue that it excessively stretches the guidelines stipulated by the dietary supplement health and education act.

Acetylcholine is a learning transmitter that is usually involved in the contraction of muscles, as well. The increase of this compound in the body is extremely useful to weightlifters and scholars. From the studies conducted on the effects of a huperzine, a dosage in animals and humans showed that there are no side effects of the dosages when they are routinely supplemented. It is also a huge component in the study of compounds that can be used to fight Alzheimer’s disease. Additionally, it can also be used for memory and learning enhancements, especially if the forgetfulness is as a result of age. It also increases alertness and energy and can be used for diseases like the myasthenia gravis by protecting the nerves from damage.

Benefits and Effects

It is known to have neuroprotective effects. The drug contains nerve gases and organophosphates that are inhibitors of acetylcholine esterase. As such, it can be used to prevent nervous system dysfunctions and seizures that are causes of soman. It also protects the neurons in the body from glutamate toxicity. Glutamate is an amino acid neurotransmitter that is used to kill neuronal cells by causing an overstimulation of the NMDA receptors. [2] Also, it works perfectly for the mature neurons in the body. As an NMDA receptor antagonist, it can help prevent the neurons from dying as a result of the intoxication of the glutamate.

Oxidative Damage

Glutamate toxicity usually causes oxidative damage because it activates the BDNF-dependent and mTOR signaling pathways. This causes an iron overload that, in turn, causes oxidation. Huperzine A reviews show that it helps to prevent oxidative damage.

Cell Death

When recovering from spinal and brain injury, a huperzine A dosage works together with other substances that support the brain like fish oil and multivitamins in your diet to increase blood flow to the brain. As a result, you experience an increase in cognitive functions. This is especially useful for players who have histories of concussions. It also helps to encourage recovery from brain bleeding. Therefore, it prevents cell death and mitochondria damage.

Alzheimer’s

From the systemic review of the many interventions that are recommended for Alzheimer’s disease, studies suggest that huperzine A dosage for memory is a stronger mitigation for Alzheimer’s disease than most of the cognitive interventions that have been put in place. While these studies do not tend to be well controlled and are not very conclusive, there are numerous benefits that users can gain from this supplement. It also works by reducing the damage caused by severe instances of sepsis, which is a bacterial infection in the brain. Also, it works by reducing the inflammation and increasing the function of cholinergic neurons.

Depression

Huperzine A nootropic is great for the treatment of depression and has helped to solve the cognitive impairment symptoms that result from stress. In animals, huperzine A before bed was shown to protect brain cells from overexcitement. As such, it averts death in people who experience convulsions. It is an effective treatment for epileptic seizures. Huperzine A makes the brain tissues more resistant to seizures from the many forms of epilepsy. It is also known as the safest way to treat individuals who have drug addiction withdrawal symptoms. The substance helps them withdraw without causing permanent damage.

Memory & Nootropic Benefit

Its ability to supplement acetylcholine affords numerous cognitive benefits as acetylcholine is the neurotransmitter responsible for learning and memory. [8] It can also benefit focus and attention.* [9] Huperzine A is an effective memory supplement. One study showed Huperzine A was able to benefit memory and learning performance in students complaining of memory inadequacy.* [10]

How It Works

Huperzine A dosage increases the level of acetylcholine in the brain and blocks the action of cholinesterase. Also, it works great as an NMDA receptor antagonist. It has been shown to work as a neuroprotective and protects neurons from damage as a result of peroxides, glutamates, and beta-amyloid. According to studies, it helps to promote neurogenesis. Four out of the five drugs that are approved by the FDA to treat Alzheimer’s diseases are cholinesterase inhibitors. Acetylcholine is known to play a critical role in the formation of new memories [3]. The increased levels of high acetylcholine in the body as a result of the huperzine increase the magnitude of the neurotransmissions to the cortex. It suppresses the excitation of the cortex by releasing glutamate into the body. The net effect of these actions is that the circuits in the brain and able to respond faster to sensory stimulants and thus, decrease the excitatory feedback that stops the successful retrieval of memory from the brain. It, therefore, improves the memory of patients with Alzheimer’s. They also slow the progress of the disease because they have neuroprotective effects on the brain. Unlike other acetylcholine drugs that act in other areas of the body and cause severe side effects on the muscles, digestive tract, and lungs, huperzine A has been shown to only act on the brain. As a consequence, this reduces the side effects that most medications cause.

Dosage

Huperzine A dosage for memory requires you to take huperzine A 100 mg twice a day. Note that huperzine A 500 mg and 200 mg twice a day is the best way to treat Alzheimer’s disease. Regular users are always asked to take a break from the drug every couple of weeks to prevent habitual use. After taking this drug for three weeks, cycle off of it for one week or so before going back to regular use. You also do not have to take your dosages with food because it is absorbed into the body quickly and will start work immediately. In about 30 minutes, you will begin noticing differences in your memory capabilities. A single dose is enough to get you 24 hours of benefits because it has a long half-life in the body. [4] This drug is also very capable of passing the blood-brain barrier after taking the dosage, and it quickly accumulates in the cerebrospinal fluid.

Side Effects

Unless in the case of a huperzine A overdose, this medication seems quite safe even when you take it every day. It does not have to be taken daily, and you can easily cycle it to avoid huperzine A tolerance. Users should note that it can cause digestive tract upsets like vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea. Taking the drug every day for six [5] months without cycling can cause muscle twitching, incontinence, and drooling. It can also cause slower heart rates. When taken during pregnancy, its effects are unknown.

Stacks

Choline Sources

Staking it with choline sources like Alpha GPC increases the amount of acetylcholine in the brain, thus enhancing the effects of huperzine A. It may also be taken with choline supplements to increase the huperzine A content.

Racetams

This may also be a great choice. It helps to activate the glutamate receptors that are close to the acetylcholine receptors. This sensitizes the acetylcholine receptors and makes the more active. It also increases the effect of both drugs in the brain.

Fish Oil and Huperzine A

Fish oil is an outstanding omega-3 fatty acid DHA and EPA source. Combining it with huperzine A helps improve blood flow and enhance whole-body health. It is also known to impact cognitive function and mood positively, which is important for the brain.
